How I started writing songs

I began classical piano lessons at the age of six. However, when I reached high school, I developed an interest in pop songs. I wanted to be able to play and sing along to my favourite songs within minutes, and the easiest way to achieve that was by teaching myself chords. This made it much easier to pick up any sheet music, read the chord symbols, and play them on the piano.
Since sheet music was not cheap, I also figured out some of my favourite popular songs and soon had a whole book full of sing-along songs that I could accompany myself with on the piano. After playing a combination of sing-along song and classical songs, I would just randomly play notes and chords and basically mess around on the piano.
When something sounded amazing to me, I would grab my tape recorder (yes, I am that old) and record it. It all started with just a piano tune. Then, I would grab a pen and paper and start writing lyrics with melodies that matched the way I felt the music sounded. Sometimes, a whole song concept (verse and chorus) could be created in an afternoon after school. In a few days, I would complete the song by doing touch-ups and final lyrics for the extra verses.
However, most of these songs ended up having one massive intro before the actual vocal melody started. I mainly write piano pieces with vocals, but I have also written a few instrumental and guitar songs.
One of my first releases, "It Shows," written for the rock band ‘vital curv’, was a song I composed on an electric stage piano/keyboard where I also added the string sound.
Here is the released version with a touch of the original keyboard part (home recorded). I also included the original string intro, which was cut because the intro was already super long.
I wrote the song in D minor, but it had to be transposed to C minor to accommodate the lead vocalist. Hope you enjoy it!
